What Starfyre said is pretty much what most video-makers use today. Though there is this rather new program called Playclaw, some people use that too. I use Fraps, After Effects, Cinema 4D and Sony Vegas.

Not bad :)... The gameplay was a little "doll" though (the sniping, laying down in almost every clip),- I didn't really fancy the music either. You don't need to have an effect every 15th second, it's completely okay to go without them,- I often have none in my videos (I just make transitions with the way the character moves/the weapons animation and the music).

use bandicam. Better than both fraps and playclaw and every option is configurable unlike fraps, plus a 1 minute video on fraps is like 1gb and 200mb on bandicam.

Fraps video quality is better than Bandicam's, thus the file size will be larger (Fraps still need to work on that though). Bandicam might run better (less lag) and the files might fill less and that's good for those who don't have a very good computer, but those who can run Fraps might as well.

Also I'd say that Dxtory is a better candidate than Bandicam.
    - My observations are based on a lot of youtube videos, plus a little personal experience.

MSI Precision allows you to record in full size without lag.. it doesnt record sound though...

Fraps, if you try to record full size video, you will take a performance hit.

I just downloaded the dxstory from TPB and it works amazing. I had problems with fraps, it kept taking my fps down to 30 no matter what settings i used. This dxstory seems good so far (gotta tweak the settings) ;D

Dxtory vs bandicam videos, there is very little difference in quality. I have all of them, playclaw, bandicam, fraps, dxtory, afterburner and i use bandicam. Dxtory is the only other recording software apart from bandicam that lets the user set recordings at any size they want. Fraps has set sizes and you cannot change the video or audio codecs; plus when recorded you have a MASSIVE video file which needs to then be put in a 3rd party video editor for it to be put on youtube etc
Bandicam's quality is great and its video sizes are MUCH smaller than dxtory's, as bandicam compresses the files as it records which no other software does. Dxtory is VERY configurable but if you have a few hours to waste configuring to get it perfect, its worth it, but i found problems from the outset with recording 2 audio sources and also the video, which no matter what i did, caused the video output sizes massive. I don't want to record a 30 minute video @ 5gb then spend 3 hours compressing and changing the output file, so its a decently small file to upload to youtube, when bandicam has a set recording level for youtube at 720p and a 30 minute video comes out at 1.2gb, so record, upload with no 3 hour post processing needed.

From my point of view the video quality of Bandicam, is not as good as Fraps and Dxtory. I can't help to think that you're a Bandicam fan, it just looks to me that way. I'm not really a fan of any recording software, and I am going to try Bandicam (thanks for recommending it, but I'm a bit skeptical because you seem like a big fan of it (which sometimes make people think it's the "God" over all the competitors).

My video editing process (Pauses, Editing, Music, etc. excluded).
    1. Record the footage. I think the last time a made a video, the size was at 32GB. It's not a big deal for me, I have an SSD and a 1TB HDD. I save all the footage from Fraps directly to the HDD.
    2. Compile the 3-4 minute video, with the file size at maybe 135MB, and that takes about 20-60-80 minutes to render (depends).
    3. Upload the video, takes about 20-60 minutes (depends).
    4. Profit.

Dxtory and Bandicam are obviously not the only recording software where it's possible to change the size of what you want to record (if that's what you meant). There's for example also HyperCam.

I am not a fan of bandicam, like i mentioned i have all of the above mentioned apart from hypercam. All i wanted was a recorder which didn't kill the fps in-game and didn't have me spend another few hours recoding it, so the render size was 720p or above for Youtube and bandicam does this, fraps does not.
Fraps even though i found great at 1st, is very limited in its configurable outputs i.e 1/2 size, 1/4, full etc and you cannot change any codecs or even audio recording htz i.e 44000, 42000 etc etc Plus with fraps i experienced some fps drops in-game. Also another negative point is, not alot of people have the time( for recoding) OR space to save a 32Gb file to their drive. I have tried dxtory a few times and it seems a great piece of software and i am sure in time will become my favourite recorder once i found out all the in's and out's of its interface. Only problem i have seen is the kicks you get by PB which have been mentioned, so have just tested it offline with skyrim. I have no idea the fps drop this software would or would not give me.
Fraps would be the ideal candidate if it had more configurable options for both audio and video, plus if somehow the software programming could be changed to compress the video file as it records; but sadly it does not.
I do use Fraps if i want to record maybe a 30 second/1 minute video sometimes, but anything of significant length i.e 30 minutes+ i use Bandicam as a Fraps video output for this length would be a retardingly massive file.
Its all swings and roundabouts, each person likes their own thing, i just found on my pc, bandicam runs greats; records in a quality good enough for my tastes for youtube; the file sizes are minimal; minimal loss of fps compared to Fraps; i don't have to re-render the video in another 3rd party software just to get 720p/1080p as Bandicam allows you to record at that level, unlike Fraps.

My main 2 at the moment are fraps and bandicam, but in all this time fraps has not changed and other software is coming out which is light years ahead in options and recording.

I understand and agree (partially), but from what the thread starter wrote, it sounded like he was going to make montages/and stuff (which he actually did). That means that he's going to be using a video rendering software, so it doesn't really matter weather you need to render it or not. I do see/understand why you use Bandicam though.
